Civics - World Issues Challenge
1. What’s going on in Japan is on March 11th 2011, there was an 8.9 magnitude earthquake and the tremors caused a 7m high tsunami to pummel Japan which killed around 18,000 people. Very soon after the tsunami, many countries sent aid to Japan to help injured people and help with the clean up.
2. How are countries helping? Many agencies have sent aid to Japan, one of them is the International Medical Corps who reached 20,000 people at evacuation centers with medications, food and basic supplies. They also partnered with local organization, Shapla Neer, to create a community space for evacuees living in temporary housing where they can interact with peers, seek counselling, and receive information on assistance program. The US said that they would provide any assistance needed to help recover from the catastrophic earthquake, they sent 7 US ships with rescue teams and supplies and nearly 40,000 US military are stationed across the country.
3. How does this devastation affect the economy and other countries? This affects other countries to send aid and spend money to transport rescue teams, supplies, doctors etc. The earthquake and tsunami was very devastating to Japan’s economy. Many businesses were toppled and even a nuclear plant was shook, Japan is paying a lot of money to rebuild there country and get a lot of businesses back up and running.
4. Many people “tweeted” or wrote a facebook status about how sorry they were and how horrible the tsunami was on Japan and how people can help people there. Many famous people tweeted about the catastrophe and donated money to places that sent aid to Japan.
